Everything You Need to Know before Getting a Bone Marrow Transplant
November 29, 2017
What is Bone Marrow Transplant?
It is a medical procedure performed to replace bone marrow that has been destroyed or damaged by chemotherapy, infection or any disease. The process involves transplant of blood cells which travel to bone marrow where they fabricate new blood cells and help growth of new marrow.
Bone marrow is a fatty tissue inside your bones which creates, Red Blood Cells, which carries oxygen and nutrients; White Blood Cells, which fights infection; Platelets, which are in charge for formation of clots. Bone marrow also contains undeveloped blood forming stem cells known as Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These stems are unspecialized i.e. they possibly multiply through cell division and either remain stem cells or differentiate and mature into many different kinds of blood cells.
Bone marrow helps your body make enough platelets, white blood cells, or red blood cells to avoid bleeding disorders, anemia, or infection. Healthy stem cells can come from your own body or from a donor. They are then stored and used in transplantation.
Types of Bone Marrow Transplant
The two major types of Bone Marrow Transplant are Allogeneic transplant and Autologous transplant. The type used will depend on the cause you need a transplant.
It involves the use of person’s own stem cells by harvesting your cells before beginning a damaging therapy to cells like radiation or chemotherapy. After the treatment is completed, your own cells return to your body. This treatment is only available if you have a healthy bone marrow. However, it decreases the threat of some major complications, including GVHD.
It involves the use of cells from a donor. The donor must be a compatible relative as it has to be a close genetic match, but genetic matches can also be found from a donor registry. This transplant is necessary if your bone marrow cells are damaged due to any condition. Your immune system has to be suppressed so that your body doesn’t attack the new cells you need to take medications as there is a higher risk of certain complications, such as GVHD.
After Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone Marrow success primarily depends on how closely the recipient and donor genetically match. The transplant and the state of your engraftment are regularly monitored. It generally complete around 25 days after the initial transplant. Rising of white blood cell count is the first sign of engraftment which shows that the transplant is starting to make new blood cells.
Bone Marrow transplant recovery usually takes time around three months. However, it may take up to a year for you to recover fully. Sometimes the symptoms you experience after the transplant remain with you for the rest of your life.
